New Zealand's fourth largest metropolitan area and largest inland city, Hamilton is the perfect central place to launch any visit to the Waikato. You'll find a complete range of accommodation options.

Cambridge is only a short drive from Hamilton through immaculately presented thoroughbred horse stud country. Known as the "Town of Trees" for its charming avenues of mature Oak and Elm trees, the town features a village green, English style pubs and has a nationally recognised reputation for antiques and arts and crafts stores.

The three towns of Morrinsville, Matamata and Te Aroha at the foot of the Kaimai Ranges make up Kaimai Country. Matamata is a world renown horsebreeding centre where visitors can visit the dawn training sessions, horse studs or training stables.

In the centre of Te Aroha, visitors will find magnificent mineral baths fed from thermal springs at the base of Mt Te Aroha. For over 100 years visitors have come from all round the world to "take the waters".

Raglan is the Waikato's only seaside resort with a laid back lifestyle, a tranquil harbour, safe swimming beaches, internationally renowned left-hand surf break and spectacular coastal views. Visitors can enjoy a stroll through the township of Raglan with its historic buildings, arts and craft shops and trendy cafes.

Located at the confluence of two mighty rivers - the Waikato and the Waipa - Ngaruawahia is one of the oldest and most historic of all settlements in the Waikato. The centre of Waikato Maori, Ngaruawahia's Turangawaewae Marae is the official residence of the reigning Moari monarch, Dame Te Arikinui Te Atairangikaahu. The marae hosts an annual regatta featuring Maori Waka (war canoes).

Just north of Ngaruawahia is Huntly, one of the main centres of coal-mining in New Zealand. Strategically located alongside the Waikato River, the coal fires the Huntly Power Station which is one of the major sources of electricity for the region.
